AGE RESTRICTION - You MUST be at least 16 years of age to participate in this welding competition.  All competitors under the age of 18 MUST have a properly completed parental consent form emailed to aws.nashville@gmail.com prior to the competition date.  If emailing is not possible, you may fax the form to us at 615-758-6239, ATTN:  Scott Bradley, AWS Welding Competition.

PROCESS - SMAW, no exceptions.

WE PROVIDE - Welding equipment, electrodes, and the materials to be welded will be provided, as well as electricity.  We will NOT provide air for pneumatic tools.

YOU PROVIDE - Personal Protective Equipment (PPE's) which MUST include Welding Hood, Welding Jacket, Boots (NO Tennis Shoes), Long Pants (no holes or frayed bottoms), Safety Glasses and Welding Gloves.  You MUST also provide your own weld clean-up tools like chipping hammer, brush, electric grinder, etc.  No safety gear, no welding. Period.

JUDGING - Details
  • There is a 5 minute time limit to weld and clean-up the weld.  A very brief practice will be allowed before your timer starts.  This time limit includes clean-up and prep for Visual Inspection.
  • Each contestant will be provided 6 Electrodes:  1 for practice / 5 for competition.
  • Each welder will be assigned to an AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) for the competition.  A panel of CWI's will do the final judging.
  • Winner will be based on the following:  Visual Inspection is first criteria, if a tie occurs in the top three then the decision will move to the number of electrodes used to complete the weld, and if a tie still exists then the final criteria will be time to complete weld.  However, no other methods will be used if there is not a tie in the top three after Visual Inspection by our panel of CWI's.

Disclaimer:

Welding can be a dangerous endeavor and should be approached with caution and forethought with regard to your safety and that of those around you.  This competition is NOT a place to try out welding for the first time.  Welding students, hobbyists and professionals are welcomed, but since this is a competition, experience appropriate to the task is required.

While your safety is our number one priority, and while we expect you to conduct yourself in as safe a manner as possible during your entire time on-site at the competition, accidents do happen.  Miller-Motte Technical College, it's owner's, subsidiaries, officers, board members and employees, and The American Welding Society, it's officers, members, sponsors or supporters whether national, district or local will not be responsible for actions resulting in the injury of participants or observers while on the premises where the competition is being held.

The results as agreed upon by the panel of CWI's is final.  There is no appeals process.  Be mindful that Visual Examination is subjective and up to interpretation based on AWS D1.1 code.

Hold Harmless:

By clicking the I AGREE button, you are agreeing to HOLD HARMLESS Miller-Motte Technical College, it's owner's, subsidiaries, officers, board members and employees, and The American Welding Society, it's officers, members, sponsors or supporters whether national, district or local from any matters arising from your participation in or observance of the welding competition.  You agree that you will not pursue any legal action against any of the aforementioned as a result of your participation in or observance of the welding competition.
